Despite it being Sandfall Interactive's very first game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has gone from flying low on the 2025 release radar to being one of the most anticipated arrivals during the first half of what is a very busy year. Inspired by JRPGs, the French studio's fledgling game follows a group of brave expeditioners on their quest to defeat the Paintress.

The Paintress returns once a year and paints a number on her monolith. That number is an omen, revealing that everyone that age will die. As the name of the game implies, the Paintress has painted the number 33 onto her monolith which means anyone aged 33 will imminently die. It's up to Gustave, Maelle, and the rest of Clair Obscur's core cast of characters to find and defeat the Paintress, not only saving themselves, but everyone in their world who might one day see their age painted.

Sandfall is clearly pretty confident it has your attention as there are four editions of its debut game to choose from. If Clair Obscur has piqued your interest enough that you want to give it a go, there's the standard edition that includes a copy of the game and nothing else. It's also quite a bit less than the $70 standard for triple-A games and costs just $49.99.

Even the digital deluxe edition, which includes The Flowers Collection made up of six alternative outfits and then two more outfits on top of that, is $59.99, so still less than the industry standard. You might be reading all this wondering why anyone would pay for Clair Obscur when it will be available day one via Game Pass Ultimate. Well, not everyone has an Xbox, and even those who do might not have Game Pass. Game Pass also only gets you the standard edition of Clair Obscur, so if you want any of its more expensive editions, and the extras that come with them, you'll have to buy the game.
