Microsoft Edge’s Internet Explorer mode lets you effortlessly access old websites without switching browsers. Follow these easy steps to enable or disable it.
Step 1: Click the three-dot menu at the top right of the Edge browser and select Settings.
Step 2: Select Default browser from the left sidebar and set Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode (IE Mode) to Allow.
Step 3: Click the Restart button to apply changes. To open a website in the IE Mode, press Alt F and select Reload in Internet Explorer Mode.
If you’ve had your fill with the Internet Explorer Mode in Edge, disable it using the following steps:
Step 1: Open Edge browser settings from the three-dot menu > Settings.
Step 2: Select the Default browser from the sidebar, set the IE Mode to Don’t allow, and click Restart to apply changes.
Besides using the browser context menu to access a webpage in Internet Explorer mode, you can add its toolbar button to use it seamlessly in Microsoft Edge.
Step 1: Open Edge Settings by clicking the three-dot menu at the top right.
Step 2: Select Appearance from the left sidebar and toggle on the Internet Explorer mode (IE mode) button. It will instantly be added to the toolbar for quick access.
Step 3: To remove it from the Edge toolbar, repeat the steps and toggle off the IE mode button.
The address bar will display a compatibility icon when you load a website in Internet Explorer mode. You can also confirm this from the pop-up at the top-left corner.
Microsoft Edge intelligently identifies and enables the option to use the Internet Explorer mode for old websites. However, the feature remains greyed out for incompatible websites.
