AMD Ryzen 5 5500X3D to refresh AM4 again as new gaming CPU emerges in leak

A while ago, reports indicated that AMD might not be done with AM4 just yet, with a leaker suggesting that an AMD Ryzen 5 5500X3D and Ryzen 7 5700X3D were on the way. While the Ryzen 7 5700X3D has since launched (curr. $209.96 on Amazon) and impressed in benchmarks, there hasn't been much in the rumour mill about its Ryzen 5 sibling in a while. Now, another leak, this time from the more official Eurasian Economic Commission, indicates that there may have been some truth to the previous leak of a Ryzen 5 variant.

The EEC listing contains references to a host of Ryzen 8000 CPUs, including the Ryzen 3 8300G, Ryzen 5 8500G, and Ryzen 5 8400F, but, likely of most interest to gamers on AM4 looking for an upgrade, the filing also essentially confirms the existence of the Ryzen 5 5500X3D CPU. Unfortunately, the EEC leak doesn't have any specifics about the new AM4 CPU. However, the leak last year indicated that the Ryzen 5 5500X3D would have the same six Zen 3 cores for a total of 12 threads with base and boost clocks coming in at 3.0 and 4.0 GHz, respectively.

Generally, AMD's X3D CPUs feature more cache than the regular CPUs, and that cache is also of the vertically stacked 3DV cache variety, shortening the path between the CPU cores and cache and allowing for significantly improved gaming performance. When reviewing the Ryzen 7 5700X3D refresh, Gamers Nexus(watch below) found that the move to 3DV cache improved gaming performance by anywhere between 10 and 15%. There is a similar frequency difference between the Ryzen 7 5700X and Ryzen 7 5700X3D, meaning we may see similar incremental performance gains from the Ryzen 5 5500X3D.

At the very least, a new AM4 CPU could be a nice upgrade for those who want an upgrade but are not looking to buy an entirely new motherboard, CPU, and DDR5 RAM just yet.
